What do 2005 and 2008 mean?

The Mevlevi Sema Ceremony was proclaimed in UNESCO’s Masterpieces program in 2005 and inscribed on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2008. These are separate stages; the inscription is not a blanket title awarded to all of Rumi’s writings.

Understanding a tradition

Sema belongs with its music, training, etiquette and transmission. Focusing only on the turning movement leaves out its religious and cultural meaning. The Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism’s 2008 circular emphasizes the ceremony’s connection with tradition and appropriate conditions of performance.
